I have noticed over the years than many small businesses spend entirely too much money having their web site developed. An informational business web site can cost between $500-$2500 depending on the amount of content and the complexity of the site overall. I believe that many business owners end up paying on average about $800.00 too much on their site. In most cases, this cost is incurred simply by lack of knowledge. This lack of knowledge puts your service provider at an extreme advantage.

This is the 1st of an 11 part article series designed to educate the business owner in the process of having a site developed or even developing your own site. As a business owner, it is imperative that you spend some time getting to know the jargon and technical aspects associated with web site design and hosting. This doesn’t mean that you have to become an expert but you drastically increase your chances of success by just know what you need to do. It also helps when you know what vendors are talking about to lessen your chances of being duped. You should also be familiar with the pricing associated with each part of the entire process.

In this series you will become familiar with the following topics:

• Determining what you need in your site.
• Choosing the right web hosting company based on your needs
• Developing your site on your own or hiring a developer
• Freelance vs. Web Development companies
• Choosing the look and feel of your site.
• Design considerations (Ease of use)
• Search Engine Optimization considerations
